This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a boom-type Elevating Work Platform (EWP) where the length of the boom is 11 metres or more in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a Risk Work Licence (HRWL) to operate this plant.

Boom-type elevating work platform means a telescoping device, hinged device, or articulated device, or any combination of these, used to support a platform on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated. A person performing this work is required to hold a boom-type elevating work platform HRWL.

training & assessment delivery

Theory and practical assessments for this unit will be completed in-person using the WorkSafe assessment documents. Learning resources will be accessible through our online platform, which students will gain access to after enrolment. Paper copies of these resources will also be available if preferred.

What you will learn & how you will be assessed

To successfully complete this unit, you will need to demonstrate that you can safely and competently operate a boom-type Elevating Work Platform (EWP) with a boom length of 11 metres or more.

You will be required to demonstrate your skills on at least one occasion, including:

Completing pre-start and operational checks
Checking the compliance plate, load chart and EWP suitability for the task
Setting up and stabilising the EWP correctly
Identifying hazards and applying appropriate risk controls
Using required PPE and fall protection equipment
Safely entering, operating and exiting the work platform
Operating and positioning the EWP within its rated capacity
Maintaining safe clearances from people, structures, traffic and overhead hazards
Applying emergency procedures
Identifying, isolating and reporting defective equipment
Communicating effectively with other personnel
Recording and reporting relevant information
Shutting down and securing the EWP correctly

You must also demonstrate that you can:

Follow relevant WHS legislation, standards, manufacturer requirements and workplace procedures
Assess ground and environmental conditions
Apply traffic management and exclusion zone requirements
Recognise and manage electrical, crush, collision and stability hazards
Monitor equipment performance and respond to faults or changing conditions
Use appropriate communication methods, including radios and hand signals

You will need knowledge of:

EWP capabilities, limitations, load charts and manufacturer requirements
Safe load calculations and EWP stability
Ground, weather and environmental conditions affecting EWP operation
Common hazards, including overhead power lines, traffic, structures and crush points
PPE, harnesses, lanyards, anchor points and emergency retrieval systems
Emergency, lock-out/tag-out and fault reporting procedures
Risk assessment and the hierarchy of controls
Traffic management and permit requirements
Safe shutdown, refuelling and recharging procedures
Relevant WHS requirements, documentation and record keeping

Assessment will be conducted using a boom-type EWP (11 metres or more), required PPE and safety equipment in a safe, realistic workplace environment. You must demonstrate safe and consistent performance in accordance with relevant legislation, workplace procedures and manufacturer requirements.

Requirements & prerequisites

Participants will need to demonstrate sufficient Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills. Please advise us if you have any LLND concerns or issues as support is available and adjustments can be made to ensure you are not disadvantaged in completing this course.

Participants will require a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number. If you have completed any Nationally Recognised Training from 2015 onwards, you may already have one. You can locate or create your USI number here.

Students must be 18+ years of age to participate in this course.

High-risk licence application

We process and submit the High-Risk Licence Application to WorkSafe on behalf of the student. During the course, students will be provided with an application form to complete.

Those applying for a new High-Risk Licence will need to provide a form of photo ID and a passport-quality photo.

Those adding a class to their existing WA High-Risk Licence will need to provide the card number or their current licence.

Location

This course is delivered at 33 North Jindong Road, Carbunup.

There are multiple businesses operating at this facility, so students need to be mindful of traffic, follow the posted speed limits and follow signage directing to the training area.

The duration for this course is one or two 8 hour days, running from 8am - 4pm.

Accreditation

Participants will receive a Notice of Assessment to perform high-risk work as an interim licence on the day they pass their assessment, and will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment via email within 14 days of completing the course. WorkSafe will issue and post the licence card to the student directly. Payment is required before any certification can be issued and before the WorkSafe application is submitted.

Dress code

Students need to wear long-sleeved clothing and steel-capped boots. Hi-Vis vests, hard hats and ear protection will be provided where required.
