This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work safely at heights in the resources and infrastructure industries where the worker has the potential to fall from one level to another, and the work-at-height task involves the risk of people and objects falling from heights. This unit of competency does not cover the erection of scaffolds or work platforms.

It applies to those:

working in operational roles who generally work under supervision to complete a range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of work outcomes
performing harness-based work at heights under the direct supervision of a height safety supervisor.

training & assessment delivery

We use an online platform to deliver our resources and assessments. After you enrol, you will receive an invite from the platform, prompting you to log in. You will have access to the theory section right away. We recommend this is completed prior to attendance, however, you will have the opportunity to complete this with your trainer if preferred.

All practical training and assessment will be delivered in-person with your trainer. Tasks/forms relating to the practical elements will be released to you in the platform upon attendance.

If preferred, we can provide paper copies of all resources and assessments.

What you will learn & how you will be assessed

To successfully complete this unit, you will need to demonstrate that you can safely perform work at heights in a workplace environment.

You will be required to demonstrate your skills on at least two occasions, including:

Applying relevant technical and safety information for working at heights
Locating and following the relevant SWMS, JSA, SOP or SWI
Confirming required permits and safety controls are in place before starting work
Inspecting and correctly using the required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Identifying the appropriate fall protection and safety systems
Correctly fitting, tensioning and anchoring fall protection equipment
Performing work safely at heights while protecting yourself and others below or nearby

You must also demonstrate that you can:

Confirm permits and safety documentation are current, authorised and task-specific
Follow the requirements and control measures specified in the SWMS/JSA and workplace procedures
Identify and manage hazards associated with working at heights
Use appropriate fall prevention and fall arrest systems
Secure tools and materials to prevent falling objects
Work effectively with others and follow workplace instructions
Communicate clearly with others before and during work activities
Apply safe work practices to protect yourself and others

You will need to demonstrate an understanding of:

Relevant WHS requirements and codes of practice for working at heights
Permit-to-work systems and SWMS/JSA requirements
PPE requirements, including correct selection, use and inspection
Risk assessment and the hierarchy of control
Common hazards such as overhead power lines, unprotected edges, fragile surfaces, falling objects and environmental conditions
Fall prevention and fall arrest systems, including edge protection, scaffolds, guardrails and restraint systems
The types, functions and limitations of height safety equipment
Manufacturer requirements for inspecting, using, maintaining and storing safety equipment
Safe handling and movement of tools and materials
Emergency response and rescue procedures for working at heights
Effective communication and the role of supervision in maintaining safe work practices

Assessment will be conducted in a safe, relevant workplace environment using appropriate height safety equipment, PPE and relevant workplace documentation. You will need to demonstrate consistent and safe performance in realistic workplace conditions and in accordance with relevant workplace procedures, legislation, safety requirements and operational instructions.

Requirements & prerequisites

Participants will need to demonstrate sufficient Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills. Please advise us if you have any LLND concerns or issues as support is available and adjustments can be made to ensure you are not disadvantaged in completing this course.

Participants will require a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number. If you have completed any Nationally Recognised Training from 2015 onwards, you may already have one. You can locate or create your USI number here.

This course is delivered at 33 North Jindong Road, Carbunup.

There are multiple businesses operating at this facility, so students need to be mindful of traffic, follow the posted speed limits and follow signage directing to the training area.

Accreditation

Participants will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment via email within 14 days of completing the course. Payment is required before any certification can be issued.

Dress code

Students need to wear long-sleeved clothing and steel-capped boots. Hi-Vis vests, hard hats and ear protection will be provided where required.
