Conduct tip truck operations

course description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct tip truck operations in the resources and infrastructure industries.

training & assessment delivery

We use an online platform to deliver our resources and assessments. After you enrol, you will receive an invite from the platform, prompting you to log in. You will have access to the theory section right away. We recommend this is completed prior to attendance, however, you will have the opportunity to complete this with your trainer if preferred.

All practical training and assessment will be delivered in-person with your trainer. Tasks/forms relating to the practical elements will be released to you in the platform upon attendance.

If preferred, we can provide paper copies of all resources and assessments.

What you will learn & how you will be assessed

To successfully complete this unit, you will need to demonstrate that you can safely and competently operate a tip truck in a workplace environment.

You will be required to demonstrate your skills on at least two occasions, including:

  • Organising work activities to meet site requirements

  • Applying required signage and site controls

  • Completing log-on, pre-start, start-up, park-up and shutdown procedures

  • Operating, steering, manoeuvring and positioning the tip truck

  • Raising and lowering the tray smoothly and safely

  • Applying load covers

  • Discharging loads on slopes and/or over a face

  • Dumping and spreading materials

  • Halting and parking the tip truck safely

  • Inspecting the truck and identifying faults

  • Completing required records and reports

You must also demonstrate that you can:

  • Follow relevant legislation, workplace procedures and documentation

  • Apply safe work practices and operational procedures

  • Identify and manage hazards and emergencies

  • Communicate clearly with others and follow work instructions

  • Coordinate work activities effectively with other workers

  • Report faults and other issues appropriately

  • Work safely and efficiently to achieve the required outcomes

You will need knowledge of:

  • Relevant legislation, workplace policies and procedures

  • Start-up, shutdown, safety, maintenance and reporting procedures

  • Site isolation and traffic control requirements

  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and material handling methods

  • Manufacturer specifications, capabilities and limitations

  • Different types and characteristics of tip trucks

  • Fault identification and reporting procedures

  • Load quantity calculation methods

  • Common hazards, emergencies and appropriate controls

  • Communication and coordination requirements when working with others

Assessment will be conducted using a tip truck, required PPE and relevant workplace documentation in a safe environment that reflects the requirements of the industry. You will need to demonstrate consistent and safe performance across relevant workplace situations. Where safety or environmental factors prevent assessment in the workplace, a realistic and sufficiently rigorous simulated work environment may be used.
