What you will learn & how you will be assessed

To successfully complete this unit, you will need to demonstrate that you can safely and competently operate a rigid haul truck in a workplace environment.

You will be required to demonstrate your skills on at least two occasions, including:

• Completing pre-start checks and shutdown procedures

• Driving and manoeuvring the haul truck safely and adjusting to work conditions

• Operating within the truck's rated capacity

• Positioning the truck for loading using equipment such as a face shovel, wheel loader, excavator, hopper or conveyor

• Hauling materials to designated locations such as a tip head, crusher or waste dump

• Positioning and safely dumping materials while minimising spillage

• Monitoring equipment indicators, alarms and performance

• Identifying and reporting faults or equipment issues

• Refuelling where required

• Working safely around other plant, vehicles and personnel

You must also demonstrate that you can:

• Follow SWMSs, JSAs, safe operating procedures and workplace requirements

• Wear required PPE

• Inspect and prepare the work area

• Use three points of contact when entering and exiting the vehicle

• Use horns, hand signals and other communication methods appropriately

• Communicate effectively and coordinate work activities

• Follow designated haul routes, loading/unloading areas and restricted zones

• Respond appropriately to site conditions, including gradients and marked haul paths

You will need knowledge of:

• Rigid haul truck types, capabilities and limitations

• Safe loading, hauling and dumping procedures

• Worksite traffic rules and haul routes

• Loading and unloading areas, stand-off zones and restricted areas

• Equipment indicators, alarms, faults and operational maintenance

• Safe operation on gradients and varying ground conditions

• Relevant WHS requirements and workplace procedures

Assessment will be conducted using a rigid haul truck, appropriate materials and required PPE in a safe, realistic workplace environment. You must demonstrate safe and consistent performance on at least two occasions, in accordance with relevant legislation, workplace procedures, SWMSs/JSAs and manufacturer requirements.
