What you will learn & how you will be assessed

To successfully complete this unit, you will need to demonstrate that you can safely and competently operate a dozer in a workplace environment.

You will be required to demonstrate your skills on at least two occasions, using a different material type on each occasion and completing different activities such as:

• Stripping and spreading materials

• Cut and fill

• Battering

• Stockpiling

• Bulk excavation

• Cutting drains

• Benching

• Backfilling

• Site clean-up

You will also need to demonstrate that you can select, fit, test, use and remove at least two approved attachments in accordance with workplace procedures. Attachments may include blades, rakes, rippers, winches, tree pushers, cable ploughs and other ground-engaging tools.

You must also demonstrate that you can:

• Complete pre-start checks and shutdown procedures

• Safely operate the dozer and adjust techniques to suit site and ground conditions

• Manage the risks associated with overhead power lines, including minimum approach distances and No Go Zones

• Use a safety observer where required and communicate effectively with them

• Complete work to the required specifications, line and level

• Apply safe work practices and follow policies, procedures and safe work instructions

• Wear the required site-specific PPE

• Monitor equipment indicators, alarms and performance

• Operate within the equipment's Safe Working Load (SWL)

• Refuel the machine when required

• Safely change machine attachments

• Enter and exit the machine using three points of contact

• Use appropriate communication methods and equipment

• Complete required workplace reporting and handover procedures

• Safely park and secure the equipment

• Organise work activities to meet task requirements

You will need to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Dozer operating procedures, safety requirements and machine isolation

• Workplace procedures for accidents, emergencies, fatigue, handovers and equipment faults

• Housekeeping and waste disposal requirements

• Machine guidance systems

• Overhead power line risks, including minimum approach distances, No Go Zones and safety observer responsibilities

• Equipment capabilities, limitations and safe working loads

• Ground conditions and their impact on machine operation

• Selecting, checking and correctly using PPE

• Basic material technology, compaction and earthworks calculations

• The sequence of activities involved in civil construction and earthworks

Assessment will be conducted in a safe, relevant workplace environment using an appropriate dozer, required attachments, materials and PPE. You will need to demonstrate consistent and safe performance in realistic workplace conditions and in accordance with relevant workplace procedures, legislation, safety requirements and operational manuals.
