Conduct Civil Construction Excavator Operations

course description

This unit applies to those working in site-based roles, and covers the skills and knowledge required to operate excavator operations to lift, carry and place materials.

Skills and knowledge that must be demonstrated to pass this unit include:

  • Planning and preparing for excavator operations.

  • Operating excavator in line with established requirements.

  • Lifting, carrying and placing materials to complete work activity.

  • Selecting, removing, fitting and using attachments for an excavator.

  • Preparing to relocate the excavator.

  • Conducting housekeeping activities.

lifting requirements

From 10 August 2025, the work health and safety regulations will require a high risk work licence (HRWL) be held to operate earthmoving machinery as a crane (i.e. to suspend a load) where the machinery has a safe working load (SWL) exceeding 3 tonnes.

Machinery operators will need to hold either a:

  • CN HRWL to use a non-slewing mobile crane with a SWL exceeding 3 tonnes, or

  • C2 HRWL to use a slewing mobile crane with a SWL exceeding 3 tonnes

Machinery operators are exempt from having to hold the C2 HRWL if they:

  • hold a Dogging (DG) HRWL

  • have been deemed competent in the training unit, SLELIC301 Conduct Safe Lifting with Excavators

  • can produce either a paper or electronic copy of their Statement of Attainment for the SLELIC301 course when using slewing earthmoving machinery as a crane

*We currently do not offer the SLELIC301 Conduct Safe Lifting with Excavators unit, however we are working to get this on scope.

Accreditation

Participants will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment within 14 days of completing the course.

requirements

Participants will need to demonstrate sufficient Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills. Please advise us if you have any LLN concerns or issues as support is available, and/or adjustments can be made to ensure you are not disadvantaged in completing this course.

If you have under 20 - 25 hours of experience operating, you may need to book our two-day course option. Please contact us if you are unsure which option is best for you.

There are no other prerequisites to enrol in this course.

Cape Training Facility: 33 North Jindong Road, Carbunup.

WesTrac Technology Training Centre: Boys Home Road, Collie.

Fees & duration

One-day course - Standard Fee: $950 | With CTF Rebate: $678

Two-day course - Standard Fee: $1200 | With CTF Rebate: $656

Classes run from 8am to 4pm.

If you cannot attend any of the listed dates, or don’t see the course you would like to book listed, please contact us so we can arrange this for you.

Cancellation Policy

Once the enrolment form has been submitted, your booking is confirmed with us. If you need to cancel or reschedule your booking, we need to be notified at least two business days prior. As we often need to hire machinery to run our courses, students who do not show or do not notify us in time will be required to pay the full course cost to cover administration and machine hire expenses.

Are you eligible for a CTF Rebate?

If you’re currently working in the civil construction industry, you may qualify for the CTF (Construction Training Fund) subsidy.

If you don’t currently qualify, you have up to 12 months to claim back with the CTF directly.
