What you will learn & how you will be assessed

To successfully complete this unit, you will need to demonstrate that you can safely and competently operate a telescopic materials handler in a workplace environment.

You will be required to demonstrate your skills on at least two occasions, including:

• Completing pre-start, start-up and shutdown procedures

• Checking controls, brakes and attachments for safe operation and serviceability

• Identifying, rectifying or reporting equipment faults

• Attaching and securing appropriate lifting gear

• Safely lifting, shifting and transporting loads

• Selecting, fitting, testing, using and removing approved attachments

• Transporting the machine and equipment between work sites

• Parking and securing the machine correctly

• Monitoring equipment indicators and alarms

You must also demonstrate that you can:

• Follow relevant workplace documentation, policies and procedures

• Select and wear required PPE

• Identify hazards, assess risks and manage environmental issues

• Apply safe operating techniques across varying terrain

• Access and interpret technical information

• Apply basic fault-finding techniques

• Calculate and work within safe working loads

• Communicate effectively using hand, audible and other signals

• Complete required written and verbal reports

You will need knowledge of:

• Telescopic materials handler types, capabilities and limitations

• Safe working loads and load handling requirements

• Attachment selection and safe attachment change procedures

• Safe operating techniques across different terrain

• Lifting gear and attachment requirements

• Isolation and traffic control procedures

• Hazardous materials and SDS requirements

• JSA/SWMS requirements

• Basic maintenance, diagnostics and fault identification

• Environmental management, recycling and housekeeping procedures

Assessment will be conducted using a telescopic materials handler, appropriate attachments and required PPE in a safe, realistic workplace environment. You must demonstrate safe and consistent performance on at least two occasions, in accordance with relevant legislation, workplace procedures and manufacturer requirements. Where necessary, assessment may be conducted in a realistic and sufficiently rigorous simulated work environment.
