Gas test atmospheres

course description

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work. It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

training & assessment delivery

We use an online platform to deliver our resources and assessments. After you enrol, you will receive an invite from the platform, prompting you to log in. You will have access to the theory section right away. We recommend this is completed prior to attendance, however, you will have the opportunity to complete this with your trainer if preferred.

All practical training and assessment will be delivered in-person with your trainer. Tasks/forms relating to the practical elements will be released to you in the platform upon attendance.

If preferred, we can provide paper copies of all resources and assessments.

What you will learn & how you will be assessed

To successfully complete this unit, you will need to demonstrate that you can safely and competently conduct gas testing in a workplace environment.

You will be required to demonstrate that you can:

  • Recognise and assess conditions where atmospheric testing is required

  • Select, prepare and correctly use gas testing equipment

  • Apply the appropriate testing regime

  • Select and wear the required PPE

  • Identify hazards and apply appropriate control measures

  • Take accurate atmospheric readings

  • Interpret, record and report test results

  • Apply known solutions to routine problems

  • Clean and maintain gas testing equipment

  • Communicate clearly with relevant personnel about safety conditions and procedures

  • Work within your level of responsibility and follow workplace procedures

You will need knowledge of:

  • Workplace procedures, including permit systems and SOPs

  • Safety requirements, hazards and hazard controls

  • Incident, fire and accident procedures

  • PPE requirements

  • Common atmospheric hazards and contaminants

  • Explosive ranges, including upper and lower explosive limits

  • Atmospheric exposure standards, including time-weighted averages (TWA), short-term exposure limits (STEL) and peak limitations

  • Conditions that can cause an atmosphere to become hazardous

  • Units used to measure atmospheric contaminants, including mg/m³, ppm and % v/v

  • The potential toxic effects of exposure to hazardous gases

Assessment will normally be conducted off the job before you perform gas testing unsupervised, using the relevant gas testing meters, tools, equipment and safety gear. You will need to demonstrate preparation, testing, interpretation of results, reporting, equipment maintenance and responding to problems across realistic workplace situations. Assessment may include demonstrations, walk-throughs, workplace-based scenarios, case studies and "what if" situations. Where appropriate, industry-based simulation may be used, provided it realistically reflects workplace conditions.
