This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to identify requirements for safe precast and tilt-up work in construction. It includes requirements for safe handling of prefabricated concrete elements such as precast wall panels, beams, columns and slabs. A person working at this level is expected to complete tasks assigned to them under supervision.

training & assessment delivery

We use an online platform to deliver our resources and assessments. After you enrol, you will receive an invite from the platform, prompting you to log in. You will have access to the theory section right away. We recommend this is completed prior to attendance, however, you will have the opportunity to complete this with your trainer if preferred.

All practical training and assessment will be delivered in-person with your trainer. Tasks/forms relating to the practical elements will be released to you in the platform upon attendance.

If preferred, we can provide paper copies of all resources and assessments.

What you will learn & how you will be assessed

To successfully complete this unit, you will need to demonstrate that you can identify and understand the requirements for safe precast and tilt-up construction work in a workplace where these processes are used.

You will be required to demonstrate that you can:

Identify the safety requirements for precast and tilt-up construction at one workplace
Identify hazards and apply basic risk management principles
Recognise the safety requirements for equipment and tools used in precast and tilt-up work
Identify relevant workplace safety procedures, documentation and control measures
Understand how different stages of the precast and tilt-up construction process are connected
Recognise potential faults, problems and hazards that can occur when safety and design requirements are not followed

You will need knowledge of:

Basic risk management principles for precast and tilt-up construction
Safe use and requirements for equipment such as:
- Cranes
- Elevated work platforms
- Manual, electric and pneumatic tools
- Mobile scaffolding
- Braces and props
- Rigging equipment and gear
- Safety nets and static lines
Relevant WHS and regulatory requirements
AS 3850 – Prefabricated concrete elements
Duty holder responsibilities
Emergency procedures
JSAs, SWMS and work plans/WHS management plans
PPE requirements
Working safely around mobile plant, machinery and other site hazards
The main stages of precast and tilt-up construction, including:
- Design and manufacture
- Handling, storage and transportation
- Cranage and erection
- Temporary bracing, stabilisation and incorporation of panels
- Demolition
Common faults, problems and hazards that can arise when design or safety requirements are not met

Assessment will be based on your ability to identify safe work requirements at one workplace where precast or tilt-up construction is undertaken. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of relevant WHS requirements, equipment, documentation, risk controls and the different stages of the construction process.

Requirements & prerequisites

Participants will need to demonstrate sufficient Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills. Please advise us if you have any LLND concerns or issues as support is available and adjustments can be made to ensure you are not disadvantaged in completing this course.

Participants will require a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number. If you have completed any Nationally Recognised Training from 2015 onwards, you may already have one. You can locate or create your USI number here.

Location

This course is delivered at 33 North Jindong Road, Carbunup.

There are multiple businesses operating at this facility, so students need to be mindful of traffic, follow the posted speed limits and follow signage directing to the training area.

Accreditation

Participants will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment via email within 14 days of completing the course. Payment is required before any certification can be issued.

Dress code

Students need to wear long-sleeved clothing and steel-capped boots. Hi-Vis vests, hard hats and ear protection will be provided where required.
